These incredible survivors of the Civil War were primed on an as-needed basis on a small military hand press. Each letter had to be handset as in the time of Gutenberg. Wherever the Army of the Potomac went, the press traveled with it and orders were printed in camp for the solders. These are approximately 8 x 5 and range in length from a single page to a double-sided page, depending on the orders issued by Gen. George Meade. Meade, the commander in chief, became famous for his stunning victory at the Battle of Gettysburg contents could include court marshals, promotions and procedural changes.
