These stock certificates are the ultimate piece of Western Americana.
Each gold and silver mining stock certificate is from Bodie. Calif.. now one of the most famous ghost towns. More than 125 years ago. it was one of the wildest of the Wild West boom towns.
Each stock certificate is dated 1879. Each has a beautiful central vignette showing a horse drawn freight car filled with gold and silver approaching the mine in Bodie. On the left side of the document is another vignette showing a full figure of a miner in with his pick over his shoulder.
This is an unissued near-mint stock printed on necessity paper (perhaps swapping paper) due no doubt to a shortage of other types of paper.
Bodie grew from 20 miners to an estimated 10,000 by 1880. at which point the town bussed with robbers. gunfighters. prostitutes and miners who had come in from every comer of the world.
Today, Bodie is one of the best preserved ghost towns in America and a tourist destination.
